On Thursday, May 23, 2024, at approximately 7:00pm, 6 District (Port Colborne) uniform officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service attended the area of Main Street West and King Street in the City of Port Colborne in response to a threats call.
Investigation revealed a male was at a bar in this location threatening the establishments staff with a gun.
Officers attended the area and located the male suspect in a vehicle in the parking lot. Officers approached the suspect where he was observed throwing a rifle in the rear of his vehicle. The suspect then attempted to reverse out of the parking lot when he collided with a parked vehicle.
Officers were able to place the male under arrest and located a loaded .22 Calibre Cooey Bolt Action Rifle and pepper spray.
There were no physical injuries as a result of the incident.
3 District (Welland/Port Colborne) Detectives have taken carriage of the investigation.
Cory Elliott (40 years old) of Port Colborne, was arrested and charged with the following offences:
- Uttering Threats
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
- Possess Restricted or Prohibited Firearm without Holding a Licence
- Possess Firearm other than Restricted or Prohibited Firearm Knowingly not holding a Licence
- Possession of a weapon
- Impaired Operation
- Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand
Elliott was held in custody pending a bail hearing that is expected to take place on May 24, 2024, at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse located at 59 Church Street, in the City of St. Catharines.
