In May of 2024, detectives with 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) and 3 District (Welland/Fonthill) began an investigation into a string of break and enters and theft of motor vehicles by a suspect in the City of St. Catharines and in the City of Welland. 

Investigation revealed that the suspect has either broken into or accessed unlocked residential doors and taken people’s property.

As a result of the investigation, detectives were able to identify the suspect.

Nicholas K. SHAVER (24 years old) of St. Catharines was arrested and charged with the following offences:

• Break and Enter and Commit/Dwelling House (5 Counts)
• Assault with a weapon
• Theft of Motor Vehicle (5 Counts)
• Attempt to Commit Indictable Offence
• Theft Under $5,000 (2 Counts)
• Fraud Under $5,000
• Possess Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000   
• Fail to Stop After Accident
• Arson/Fire Causing Property Damage
• Mischief/Damage to property not exceeding $5,000
• Possess/Use Credit Card Obtained by Offence
• Breach of Probation
• Drive Motor Vehicle – No Valid Licence

SHAVER was held in custody pending a bail hearing that is expected to take place on May 25, 2024 at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse located at 59 Church Street, in the City of St. Catharines. 

The investigation remains ongoing with detectives from 1 District and 3 District.
